about
I wrote In The Morning after hearing Beck’s, Up All Night. The video for the song is excellent! It’s all about a girl who saves someone from a fantastical party. The whole song is pretty much one progression, and I thought, “Dang, I’ve never tried that. Can I do that?” Then I saw some random video on that Ed Sheeran song, Shape Of You, talking about how the whole song is just one chord progression. I wanted to see if I could pull that off.
I grew up going to house shows and crashing parties. My friends and I were always looking for something exciting to do. I love meeting new people and being in new spaces, which is probably why I love touring! The verses and bridge of In The Morning are mostly autobiographical. I pulled from all these random memories I have.
The idea of the song is two people show up to a party and quickly realize things are a bit crazy. The impulse is to leave but at the same time, there’s a desire to stay and see what happens. The chorus is the moment were you decide, “Ok, I’m just going to ride this thing out.” And in the songs case, stay until the morning.
In the bridge, the two characters decide to kiss. As they do, the sun begins to rise. Turns out, staying at the party was worth it for them. I think this kiss is a symbol that could mean love, opportunity, experience, or just living your life to the fullest. I’ve had moments where I played it safe and regretted it later. I’m a bit of a risk taker. I always want to push myself to try new things and have new experiences. For me that’s a big part of what makes life worth living.
The lead guitar work was a nod to the guitar tones of St. Vincent and Deep Sea Diver. They both have such epic guitar tones! I paired a Dream Sequence and my Memory Man Delay guitar pedals. With the bass and drums we went for more of a motown, Jackson 5 sort of thing. This song features some of Seattle’s best session players. Alex Westcoat on drums, David Dowda on bass, and Gabe Molinaro on keys. They really made the track come alive.
lyrics
We step through the portal to the party pad
Front door had been left open wide
On we go down the rabbit hole
Think I better leave before long
Someone just walked in carrying a stop sign
No one seems to notice at all
Let’s dream a little longer
Think I’m gonna leave here
Think I oughta leave here
Think I’m gonna leave in the morning
You turn to me and ask me plainly
Have you ever done this before
Quick as I can with an evening smile
sure, uh huh, of course
Potions are passed out a spell is cast
Silverware is in the front yard
Let’s step out and get some air
Blue and red sparks in your hair
We share the sweetest kiss
Marmalade Sunrise
In the morning
We’ll leave in the morning
Stay up all night with you
